The online magazine the St. Louis Beacon has a story adding fuel to the rumor that Bishop Salvatore Matano is the leading candidate to replace Archbishop Burke. Again, rumors are rumors, but I post it for your speculative enjoyment. Believe any name when it appears in the Bulletin.
There are some things in this story, however, that merit comment. First, it is obvious the writer doesn’t read Saint Louis Catholic (and good for her, I say) when she states that no one in St. Louis has mentioned Matano as a candidate. As a matter of fact, of the sources that have named him to me, two were located in St. Louis.
Also, the other candidates mentioned as possibilities in the story I think are highly unlikely, other than Bishop Cordileone, whom she ranks as the “dark horse”.
All it proves, probably, is that our sources are of equal reliability. Which is to say, anywhere from lock-solid to completely incredible.
