I am glad, at any rate, that Canon Talarico refused to agree to the cardinal’s terms.
Like I posted before, THAT IS the “standing up to Cupich” the internet warriors are calling for. The example of principled, steely meekness is to their credit, in my book.
My preference for thumbing him in the eye notwithstanding.
But that day will come, when Bergoglio comes for the Institute, or the bulk of it anyway. And I have confidence in their response. That’s all I have to say about that until that time comes. Until then, I will pray that he converts, and until then cling 5o the true Mass against all comers.
There are of course those who have been urging something more defiant – just keep saying Mass, and telling His Eminence to go get stuffed.
The Institute has – what? – upwards of 40 apostolates around the world, with 17 of them in the United States. A decision to defy a bishop’s removal of faculties in one diocese – a bishop who is a cardinal archbishop who seems to swing the biggest stick in Rome of any American bishop – would probably make even sympathetic bishops hosting the ICK in other dioceses look askance at them (to say nothing of Rome’s reaction). In short, a decision to go rogue in one diocese risks being a decision to go rogue in ALL of them. And they don’t own most of those churches. Meaning, they could be *legally* evicted, and would have to find new locations to celebrate Mass – and find a way to pay for it.
And maybe it will come to that. If a half dozen of their other bishops make similar demands of the Institute, then maybe at that point, they don’t have so much to lose. Or as you say, it’s even more obviously a red line if Francis decides to revoke their constitution. But I share your sense that the Insititute leadership will do the right thing when the time comes.
Richard Malcolm, can you please direct me to Canon Talarico’s statement regarding this matter? Thank you very much!
So far as I canmake out, neither Talarico nor Cupich has released any statement on the matter.
This is so obviously an attack on Holy Mother Church. We’ve all known it was coming. A higher Authority than Cupich tells us that evil must not be cooperated with. Satan is doubtless enjoying watching the Bride of Christ being tortured in this way.
Dear Lord Pray for Us All!
Everyone reading here knows I’m an Institute guy, all the way. Why? Stuff like this, the deep devotion to the Church, the Salesian combo of Truth and Charity, and the care of the liturgy. They are smart, and prudent.
We are all human, and neither they nor we are perfect. There will likely come a time when the only course faithful to Christ and His Church is to begin with the eye-thumbing. When it comes, I pray they do the right thing. I fully expect them to.
Whether they do or not, I pray to God and to the Blessed Mother to give me the fortitude, prudence, charity and wisdom to do what I need to do for my soul and those of my family.
I often ponder a meditation from Gueranger, about Peter boasting he would not betray the Lord, and how if he had instead prayed, “Lord, I beg you, please preserve me from betraying you!”, that the Lord Who loved him would certainly have granted it. Humility is called for. Trust in God in affliction is called for. Christ is in charge.
May He grant us all the grace of refusing to betray Him, and all the glory to Him.
God bless you sir. I will offer up our family’s Rosary for the ICKSP Parishioners this afternoon.
I noticed your use of this term above – “steely meekness”.
So many fail to understand meekness and why it is that the “meek” will, much less should, “inherit the earth”.
Perhaps it was you that expounded upon it. If so, I’d ask you to reprint it here as it is such an important concept to master in the coming days. If not, in sum, as I recall the proper definition centered around courage, character, will – all properly ordered to a higher purpose and restrained until needed by circumstance to prevail for the cause of good.
Again, God bless you and all the ICKSP Faithful, and all the Catholic Faithful everywhere who share the same suffering with you.
Hello Timman,
Just wondered if you saw this from the Curmudgeon? He’s come out of blooging retirement briefly with some interesting information and commentary on the Institute’s situation:

I was not at all aware of that quit claim deed provision.
Any time you see the phrase “… at xxxx’s sole discretion… ” – line it out before you sign. Or don’t sign.
An entire document of mutual legal understanding rendered irrelevant by that one innocuous phrase, placed there to keep status quo authority under the Bishop.
It goes to show – documents of special permission for privileged groups are not what these groups think they are both because (1) where we Catholics go one, we go all (by definition) and (2) permissions are ultimately only as good as the word of the one granting them.
The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is for all Catholics by Divine right. *No one* can take that away from any Catholic, anywhere, for any reason. Special permissions, ultimately, are invalid for that same reason.
